ISE Signs Exclusive Distribution and Supply Agreements With Maxwell Technologies, Leading Supplier of Ultracapacitor Products

Maxwell to Sell ISE Energy Storage Systems Worldwide in Various Verticals; ISE to Source Its Ultracapacitor Cells Through Maxwell

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwire - June 10, 2010) - ISE Corp., a wholly-owned subsidiary of ISE Limited (TSX: ISE), entered into two exclusive agreements with Maxwell Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MXWL), a leading manufacturer of energy storage products:

ISE will source ultracapacitor cells for use in its advanced ultracapacitor energy storage systems (ES Systems) exclusively from Maxwell through December 2011

Maxwell will exclusively purchase from ISE ultracapacitor based energy storage systems for sale or distribution by Maxwell and its affiliates into the heavy duty vehicle market through December 2011

"ISE is committed to fostering long-term mutually beneficial relationships," stated Rick Sander, CEO and President of ISE. "In 2001, we signed a strategic development and supply agreement and began working with Maxwell. Today's agreements extend our alliance, provide additional validation of our ES Systems, and represent a significant milestone in our growth strategy. Partnering with Maxwell Technologies provides us with access to its extensive sales force, distribution system and installed base into geographies we haven't yet penetrated. It also creates the opportunity to address ES Systems needs for non-transit markets Maxwell serves, such as industrial and other stationary uses. This strengthens our presence in the rapidly growing energy storage market, particularly as we increase production of our fourth generation liquid cooled ultracapacitor-based ES Systems."

David J. Schramm, President and CEO of Maxwell Technologies, stated: "ISE has developed a rugged, modular, scalable and high-powered ES System incorporating Maxwell ultracapacitor cells and liquid cooling for reliable performance in extreme environments. With our technology as the foundation, ISE has over 200 ES Systems currently in operation, and we believe the market opportunity is promising."

ISE's Ultra-ETM ES System is one of the most advanced energy storage systems available on the market today, combining ISE's energy storage system technology and Maxwell's ultracapacitor cell technology. Included in the technology design is an intelligent battery management system that actively monitors each cell. The system is fully integrated with the following features:

  • Thermal management through active-liquid cooling
  • Pre-charge isolation management
  • High voltage and current sensing
  • Main contactors
  • System diagnostics and prognostics
  • Environmentally sealed to IP67 / IP6k9k specifications

This robust feature set enables ISE's Ultra-ETM ES Systems to be interfaced with a range of high duty cycle applications around the world such as mining, heavy-duty trucking, rail, and smart grid energy/power management systems.
